Pipe Band History

1965 -75

Fraser Pipe Band, Regina

as pipe major of the band in 1975, led the band to 3rd place in Canadian Pipe Band  Championships, Grade 3

1976

Selkirk and District Pipe Band

competed with the band in Grade 2, including a trip to the Canadian Championships

1977

Clan Scotia Pipe Band

formed new band in Regina; competed in Grade 3, band pipe major

1978  

The Renfrew Pipe Band, Scotland

competed with this Scottish Grade 1 band under the direction of Pipe Major Iain McLeod, five times P/M of a world championship band (Edinburgh Police); played at major Scottish Championships, the CNE contest and tattoo, and placed 6th in the Scottish Champion of Champions table.

1979-80

Clan Scotia Pipe Band

competed in Grades 3 and 2, band pipe major

1981

The Babcock-Renfrew Pipe Band, Scotland

competed with this Scottish Grade 1 band under the direction of Pipe Major Iain McLeod and L/D Joe Noble; the band was often in the prizes at major Scottish Championships, and placed 6th in the Scottish Champion of Champions table. I competed at Northern Meeting, Inverness and many solo events.

1985-91

Simon Fraser University Pipe Band

placed several times in the World Pipe Band Championships, including 1986 (4th Prize), 1987 (2nd prize), 1988 (2nd prize), 1990 (5th prize), and 1991  (5th prize).

1991 & 92

Strathfleet Pipes & Drums, Saskatoon

performed as pipe major of the Strathfleet band, Grade 2 (Sask. Grade 2 Champions)

Fall 1992 - present 

The City of Regina Pipe Band

formed a new Grade 2 pipe band; have served as P/M since the start; the band has won every Grade 2 provincial championship since 1992, was Alberta Grade 2 Champion in 1996, 97, 98 and 99; and has been in the prize list at Maxville each year in '96, '97, '98 and '99. (Best prize: 3rd in 1997).

Solo Awards

Well, I've always thought it would be great to win the Gold Medal...does that count? I have competed professionally for a very long time, and over the years have NOT won the Gold Medal, but I have some highlights. They include: 5th in the Piobaireachd at South Uist in 1978; prizes around the Games in BC; everything winable in Manitoba and Saskatchewan; a finalist in the BC Pipers Knockout (1989); the piobaireachd events at Selkirk, MB; Canmore (1992); Calgary (1996, 98), Red Deer (1998), plus prizes in the light music at all these games; 2nd prize in the marches at Maxville (1997); 4th prize in the marches at Montreal (1997); 1st in jig, 2nd in piob., 3rd in msr at St. Ann's, Cape Breton (1997); 3rd in Piobaireachd at the BC Pipers Annual Gathering (1999), 2nd in the MSR at Calgary (1999), 3rd in the Canmore Gold Medal (1999), 2nd in piobaireachd and jig/hornpipe at Red Deer (2000), 3rd in jig/hornpipe at Ellerslie, 2nd in the jig/hornpipe at Pacific NorthWest Highland Games (2000) in Enumclaw, 2nd in the medley event at Skagit Valley Highland Games (2001), and 3rd in Piob. and MSR at Calgary, and 2nd at Canmore in Jig/Hornpipe and MSR. In 2003 there weren't many solo contests, but I played at Maxville (8th/28 in marches) and Montreal,(5th in piob. & marches) as well as 3rd in the Marches at the Atholl & Breadalbane Gathering, and 4th in Jigs at Birnam Games.
